Embassy of Sri Lanka in Yangon celebrates International Tea Day 2026 with “Experiencing Ceylon Tea”

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Yangon, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tea board, hosted a Tea Evening “Experiencing Ceylon Tea”, on 21 May 2026 at the Embassy’s Residence premises to mark International Tea Day 2026, in an exquisitely adorned set up, under the theme “Sustaining Tea, Supporting Communities,”

The event commenced with the screening of tea industry documentary videos, followed by the remarks from the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Myanmar, Prabashini Ponnamperuma, who highlighted the global reputation, heritage, and cultural value of Ceylon Tea.

Minister of the Embassy, Lal Kularathna explained the significance of Ceylon tea to the Sri Lanka’s economy and ongoing promotional efforts. The presentation by Head of Hospitality, Shwe Taung Group of Companies of Myanmar, Nuwan Rathnayaka, showcased Sri Lanka’s seven tea-growing regions, premium Ceylon Tea products, and the authenticity of Ceylon Tea.

A selection of Ceylon Tea varieties, including artisanal tea was displayed and introduced. During the authentic tea tasting experience, the guests were served Ceylon tea, including seven region tea and tea-based beverages. Also, refreshments with traditional Sri Lankan cuisine delights were offered, along with Ceylon Tea.

The event was attended by the officials of the Myanmar Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President and the members of the Myanmar Tea Association, representatives from the Tourism, Hospitality, Media, and Business sectors, providing a platform for networking and promoting Sri Lankan tea in Myanmar.

Participants appreciated the Embassy’s initiative in celebrating International Tea Day with the showcasing of Sri Lanka’s distinctive tea culture and heritage. The Embassy premises were decorated to reflect Sri Lankan tea culture, varieties, traditions and hospitality. Guests were presented with gift bags which contained authentic Ceylon Tea, a Ceylon Tea icon printed mug and promotional leaflets.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Yangon extends its gratitude and appreciations to the Sri Lanka Tea Board, the Myanmar agent of Dilmah tea, partners and those who assisted, and all participants, for their support in making the event a success.
