In a continued effort to promote sustainable farming and align with international standards, the National Organic Control Unit (NOCU) successfully held its second national awareness program for 2025 at Hotel Swissdale, Matale, drawing nearly 100 participants from across the agricultural sector.
NOCU, operating under the purview of Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB), is the country’s official authority for organic agriculture.
The event was part of its strategic islandwide campaign aimed at building awareness and capacity among key stakeholders in the organic agriculture value chain. This event was organised under the guidance of the EDB Central Province Office.
Participants included farmers, exporters, processors, and Government officials, all of whom engaged in interactive sessions that focused on organic farming practices, processing techniques, national and international organic certification standards, and market access strategies. The sessions were designed to provide practical knowledge essential for competing in the growing global market for certified organic products.
Experts such as Dr. Priyanga Dissanayaka from the Department of Agriculture and Kasun Geeganage, Certifier from Control Union Inspections, contributed their insights, helping bridge the gap between policy, standards, and on-the-ground practices. Representatives from the EDB—including Deputy Directors Jayalath Hewage (Central Province Office) and Gayani Wijayathilaka (Export Agriculture Division)—also addressed the gathering. Assistant Director Vinoka Perera and Export Promotion Officer Lasith Jayawardana from NOCU provided valuable information to attendees.
This awareness program is part of four national events planned for 2025, aimed at strengthening country’s organic value chain. NOCU’s efforts support a broader national objective of transitioning to sustainable, eco-friendly agriculture that meets the rising global demand for safe and traceable food systems.
Since its inception in 2014, NOCU has played a pivotal role in developing a transparent and credible organic certification framework. By fostering education and regulatory compliance, NOCU is empowering Sri Lankan producers to meet international requirements and enhance the country’s reputation as a reliable source of high-quality organic products.
