President Sirisena said that it is important to implement a state policy regarding the production, security, quality and standards of food.

President Maithripala Sirisena stated this addressing the world food day ceremony held at Banda r ana ike M e m o r i a l I n t e r n a t i o n a l Conference Hall yesterday.

The World Food Day is celebrated on 16th of October every year. This is to celebrate the establishment of the world food and agriculture organization by the United Nations.

It is celebrated under the theme “our act ions-our future 2 0 3 0 ” . P r e s i d e n t S i r i s e n a w h o addressed the ceremony said that with the long history of food production as an agriculture based country we are a nation selfsustained with food.

Yet,1/3 of the cultivations are being destroyed by animals. Due to the droughts emerging from severe climatic conditions and floods, the cultivations are often being destroyed.

In order to secure protection a regular program should be implemented, said the President.

President Sirisena was also thankful for the contribution made by the united nations food and agriculture organization to Sir Lanka.

The students who were the winners of the competition held for the world food day were also presented awards by the President Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, De puty Mini s t e r Faizer Kasim, Director of Sri Lanka for World Food Organization Brenda Brandon, re presentat ive of Sri Lanka for World Food and Agriculture Organization Cina Brandstrup, and other local and foreign representatives were present at the event.
