Prof. Munasinghe explained how over 30 years ago, at the 1992 UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, he had proposed the Sustainomics framework for global sustainability and peace. The first principle of Sustainomics was the sustainable development triangle that harmonizes economy, society and environment. In 2015, this triangle was unpacked into the United Nations 17 sustainable development goals (SDG). He emphasized that it was vital to implement the SDG worldwide to reach the noble goal of world peace. Peace is vital for sustainability, because war destroys societies, economies and environment. He summarized this process as the 4 P’s: People, Prosperity, Planet & Peace.
'The foundation of world peace is based on inner peace through the practice of seven human values of gratitude, forgiveness, love, humility, giving, patience, and truth,' he added, further stating, 'Peace-building is not just about ending conflicts, but about creating fair opportunities for all.
He apologized to future generations, because his generation was leaving them a world that is damaged, divided, and dangerous. “I am sorry we let it come to this.” Finally, Prof. Munasinghe offered hope, and expressed faith in youth to lead the way forward — if they learn from the past. “Don’t repeat our mistakes. Don’t ignore science,” he urged. He also called for the Peace Community to bridge the gap between BRICS+ and the west, to build a more prosperous multipolar world, and especially to avoid nuclear World War 3. Professor Munasinghe is Chairman of the MIND Group in Colombo, which includes the non-profit Munasinghe Institute for Development (MIND), a UN recognized centre of excellence on sustainable development, and MIND AM focusing on data analytics and management. He is Chairman of the Board of Climate & Conservation Consortium (CCC). He is also Board Director of Eureka Group, Distinguished Guest Professor at Peking University, China; Chairman of the Presidential Expert Committee on Sustainable Sri Lanka 2030 Vision; and President of Asian Geopolitics, Sustainability and Peace Council (AGSPeC).
