Twin sisters reach greater heights together clinching gold

ThejiAcademic accomplishments of twin sisters were acclaimed as a very exceptional achievement at the Annual Convocation of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura held at the BMICH in July 2015. 

Twin sisters Madubhashini Nadeesha Gunaratne and Thejani Maduka Gunaratne attained the batch’s first and second place with First Class Honours in Bachelor of Science (Special) in Food Science and Technology from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. 

One of the twins, Madubhashini Nadeesha Gunaratne obtained a first class honours with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 out of 4.0, winning two gold medals. She emerged the best student in the Food Science and Technology Degree programme obtaining the highest number of “A” grades and also won ‘Prof. Arthur Bamunuarachchi Gold Medal’ for the best industrial placement, seminar topics and research project.

Her twin sister Thejani Maduka Gunaratne, also obtained a first class honours in the same field scoring a GPA of 3.9 out of 4.0.

Another great accomplishment of both sisters is obtaining Full Scholarships from Australia’s prestigious University of Melbourne, to do their Ph.D in Agricultural Sciences.

Nadeesha and Thejani are the loving daughters of renowned educationist and Lecturer of Maharagama Teachers Training College late Rienzie Gunaratne and retired Maths Teacher Manel Gunaratne.

Not only in education, they also excelled in Kandyan dancing, guiding, badminton and other activities. They completed ‘Kala Eliya’ (debut) in Kandyan Dancing from Visha School of Dance. 

Speaking immediately after their convocation at BMICH, the twins said they owe their success in education to both their parents and to Musaeus College, Colombo where they were able to showcase their outstanding performances throughout their school career in education and also in extracurricular activities.
