Writing a letter to the President, Ceylon Teachers’ Union urged the government to appoint the members and establish the National Education Commission.
The Commission is defunct since 5 April when the appointments of the members to the commission expired.
Chairman of Ceylon Teachers’ Union Joseph Stalin Fernando pointed out that the commission was established under the 1991 No: 19 National Education Commission Act.
The Ceylon Teachers’ Union argued that all the decisions the Minister of Education made since the National Education Commission went defunct were unilateral.
The Chairman of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union said that the Minister promised as he swore in to compile a new education policy within two months. He said the Minister not only failed to keep the promise but also made the National Education Commission obsolete.
