Sajindu Perera, a past pupil of Lyceum International School, Nugegoda, was ranked Top in the World for Accounting, Top in Sri Lanka for Mathematics, and also awarded the Best Across Three Subjects, all in the June 2013 Cambridge Advanced Level Exam, and Top in Sri Lanka for Accounting and Best Across Seven Subjects (2nd place) in the June 2011 Cambridge Ordinary Level Exam. She is now successfully pursuing ACCA at Mercury Institute of Management where she scored a perfect 100% for the ACCA Financial Accounting (F3) paper. Speaking of her experience, Sajindu said: “As soon as I completed my Cambridge Advanced Level examination, I was faced with a dilemma of what I should choose for my higher education. I noted that in Sri Lanka’s corporate context, employers give a higher weightage to a professional qualification over a mere academic qualification. The main reason for this is because recruiting employees who are members of a recognised professional body gives the employer the opportunity to be endowed with the status and respect that is conveyed by the professional body to the industry. In this sense, the ACCA qualification stood out as it offers both those options! In fact, being a member of a professional body such as ACCA is a visible mark of quality, competence and commitment and such professional recognition is becoming increasingly important as the world becomes more competitive. “Furthermore, in light of the recent corporate scandals blighting industries world over, ACCA’s strong focus on ethics would further enhance employer confidence that they are recruiting ethical professionals. On the other hand, being equipped with both a professional qualification, as well as an academic qualification gives an even higher edge and the BSc. (Hons) in Applied Accounting offered by the Oxford Brookes University, UK in partnership with ACCA bears testimony to that. “Once I decided to do ACCA, Mercury Institute of Management was the first tuition provider that popped to mind, for obvious reasons. It is the only ACCA Platinum Approved Learning Provider in all of Sri Lanka and in fact, it is also one of the six Platinum Status Tuition Providers for ACCA in the entire MENASA region (Middle East, North Africa and South Asian region), a fact which draws in many foreign students. Mercury has obtained this recognition through its decades of commitment and continuous improvement of teaching standards that has produced many star performers. “I can confidently state that the lecture panel at Mercury is simply amazing in terms of knowledge, experience, commitment, enthusiasm and the extra support given. The structured plan followed at Mercury helps me stay on track at all times and ensures that I am always confident and well-prepped for exams. Mercury provides all the text and study materials free of charge and the learning environment is truly unique in that it not only stimulates learning, but also facilitates a bit of fun through various extra-curricular activities organised throughout the year, which I think is very important to strike the perfect balance between work and play. “If not for Mercury, I am sure I would have never been able to score a perfect 100% for the ACCA Financial Accounting (F3) paper. And that’s not all. Mercury’s job bank offers exciting prospects and I know that when I do decide to start working, Mercury will ensure I get placed in one of the top conglomerates they have on board.” Mercury Institute of Management Managing Director Jeevith Shakespeare said: “We are proud to have students like Sajindu studying ACCA with us. It is students like this who will someday go on to be CFOs of top companies in Sri Lanka. We will continue to support such students by ensuring personalised attention and providing a comprehensive coverage and revision plan executed by a panel of experienced and qualified lecturers, with outstanding teaching facilities to support that function.”
