SLIIT is giving a vital boost to the education sector by providing valuable educational opportunities through scholarships for students in the SAARC region in a range of disciplines at SLIIT. During the last decade, SLIIT has risen to become one of the top higher educational institutes in the region, offering students high quality, structured academic programs geared to maximise students’ employability and providing highly skilled graduates who fulfil employers’ demands for competent, top-notch professionals. “Our aim is not only to cater to the local market but to the regional and international markets as well,” opined SLIIT Chairman Professor S. Karunaratne. “We have a network of partner universities in Australia, the UK, USA and Canada and students have the opportunity to either graduate from SLIIT or from any one of the institute’s partner universities. Thus SLIIT provides a wide range of higher educational opportunities for students at the institute.” “Sri Lanka has immense potential, and we wish to spur the growth of the education sector to become an education hub not only in the region, but internationally as well,” reiterated Professor Lalith Gamage, President and CEO of SLIIT. “SLIIT enrols students from the region, and currently has students from the African continent, as well as Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and a few SAARC countries. Internationalisation is one of the key priorities in SLIIT’s 10-year plan towards achieving this goal and making Sri Lanka a preferred destination for higher education.” He further explained: “SLIIT is on the path to becoming one of the top 10 universities in the region and we are working towards making the institute a recognised global university.” SLIIT’s expansive, picturesque campus in Malabe is conducive to honing students’ skills, with state-of-the-art facilities and well-equipped laboratories coupled with a highly skilled panel of lecturers to deliver professional services for a well-rounded education at a reasonable cost. SLIIT’s attention to detail ensures that students are provided with a holistic education which goes beyond academic excellence and extends to personal development. Students are also encouraged to contribute towards the betterment of their community by participating in various community-driven initiatives. The institute’s scope as a centre for academic excellence and as a front-runner in the arena of research and development ensures the availability of a rich pool of experts in the spheres of IT, business administration, electronic engineering and hospitality within the country. It is estimated that half of the country’s IT sector professionals have received their education or training at SLIIT, which stands as a testament to the success of SLIIT as an institution of higher learning and its immense contribution towards shaping the IT landscape in Sri Lanka. SLIIT recognises exceptionally bright students nominated by SAARC countries and offers merit-based undergraduate scholarships in the form of tuition waivers for students who wish to follow degree programs at the institute. The eligibility for scholarships is determined based on students’ performance at the GCE Advanced Level (London or equivalent) exam and at the aptitude test. The institute currently offers a range of degree programs in information technology, business administration and electronic engineering for students in the SAARC region.
