12 August was a red-letter day for SKAL International Colombo when they inducted their first ever “Young SKAL” members into the club at the monthly meeting held at the Taj Samudra in Colombo. SKAL Colombo has a 59-year history in Sri Lanka being formed in 1954 and has seen many eminent persons in the travel industry taking their oaths as members but for the first time, inducted four young members who will have to keep the flag flying for SKAL in Sri Lanka in the future. Recognising the need to bring in young tourism professionals into the movement, SKAL International created a new category of membership titled “Young SKAL”, a few years ago.  The mission of Young Skal is to enrol young persons training or working in the sale and/or promotion of tourism worldwide into the movement. The objective is to welcome them into the world of SKAL International and make them familiar with its values; friendship, peace, solidarity and promoting common, local and international interests in the tourism industry thus ensuring that once a managerial position is reached, the young ‘Skalleague’, will continue to support the movement strongly, its ideals and principles and being a leader, to proactively transform the environment in which he/she lives. The first Young SKAL member to join was Cinnamon Grand Banquet Sales Manager Shanika Jayaweera followed by Taj Samudra Asst. Relationship Manager – Travel industry Services Chethana Kulatunga, Taj Samudra Treshaan Bongso Reservations Assistant and Worldlnk Group Business Development Manager Danukh Amerasinghe. Also inducted as new active members at the meeting were Ceylon Tours Managing Director Surendra Ediriweera and Ranjeeva Fonseka of Royal Holidays. Active Membership in SKAL is open to managers and executives directly involved in tourism management, sales and promotions, in specified travel and tourism businesses.
