The CIMA May 2014 results were released last week and it was a surprise in one local achievement, Financial Operations at Operational level. It was won by Riffath Rizvi a full time student having not followed classes at leading business colleges. She went to Ilma International Girls School and obtained 3 As and 1 B in the Commerce stream of London A/Ls. However getting into CIMA was a different ball game altogether. She decided to study by herself with some commitments and responsibility support from a resource person who has knowledge, relevant skills. Rizvi assimilated knowledge through relevant reading, improved time management, exam orientation skills, analysis and more importantly the key integrated approach of how the CIMA curriculum is interwoven. Being part of a silent community of students, Rizvi obtained the Sri Lanka prize for FO in Operational Level of CIMA in the May 2014 exams and had this to say: “It was under the guidance of Gihan Jayatilleke to support the learners in working through these modules that I studied. As full time student, taking the challenge of not following any course with a leading CIMA course provider, there was a lot I required in tutorial support. The exam orientation, practical examples in business and finance context, time management skills, excellent detailed explanations, all helped me to achieve success in the CIMA exams from Operational to Managerial level. The individual effort, dedication, commitment along with support from Gihan and my family enabled me to achieve this Sri Lankan prize, also being placed 3rd overall in the world for same.” The surprise behind this success keeps a low profile but is an individual with vast knowledge and experience. He is Gihan Jayatilleke, a former lecturer of Oxonia Institute and Mercury Institute who gave up same due to increased work commitments and responsibilities. He has worked in the banking, venture capital, after sales service and retail industries in various capacities and gained a vault of experience that is a much-needed critical success factor to exam success. He is also a World Prize winner for the Strategic Management and Marketing subject currently known as ES, and a Sri Lanka Prize winner of three Strategic Level subjects.
