The High Commission of India, Colombo has decided to widen the scope of Maulana Azad Postgraduate Scholarship to include arts, humanities, economics and commerce streams and has also extended the deadline for receipt of applications to 6March. With this change, 50 scholarship slots for postgraduate degrees would now be available for all subjects except Medicine and MBA.

It was decided to extend the scope of the scheme, since hundreds of requests had been received from candidates of non-science backgrounds. There were also requests from private sector employees to be allowed to compete with the state sector candidates for the coveted scholarships. This was also accepted.

The revised eligibility conditions for the scholarship are therefore as recapitulated below:

The candidate should be a Sri Lankan citizen below the age of 40 years with at least a second class degree at undergraduate level. Applicants from both private as well as government sectors would be eligible to apply.

The scheme would cover all post graduate subjects except MBA and Medicine. The last date for receipt of applications is March 06, 2012.

The Government of India selects meritorious Sri Lankan nationals for award of these scholarships. Selection of candidates would be done in consultation with the Ministry of Higher Education, Government of Sri Lanka, to pursue Postgraduate Degrees in some of the leading universities in India.

All scholarships cover full tuition fees for the entire duration of the course, in addition to a monthly sustenance allowance. The scholarship also covers accommodation allowance, an annual grant for books and stationery. Besides, all ICCR scholars in India are provided full healthcare facilities, train fare and an annual grant for educational tours to various parts of the country.

The Application forms can be downloaded from the website of Ministry of Higher Education at www.mohe.gov.lk
