Kuala Lumpur (Bernama): Maldives Deputy Education Minister Abdulla Nazeer said last week his country wanted Malaysia’s assistance to improve and expand higher education opportunities for its people as Malaysia is seen as a leading force in the field among Islamic countries.

He said his country needed more scholarships for Maldivians to study in various field such as medicine, accounting, business and education.

“Therefore Malaysia as an influential country in terms of education quality and technological facilities could provide opportunities for Maldivians to study in various fields,” he said during a visit by the Islamic Conference of Ministers of Higher Education and Scientific Research delegations to the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) here, Thursday.

Abdulla said he also hoped that both countries could exchange expertise in the field of Syariah Law as the country was also practicing Islamic law.

“We lack training for magistrates and lawyers in our country due to our small population... so I think it would be good if we can get expertise from Syariah and law faculties from Malaysia,” he said.
