LOLC Micro Credit rewards young scholars

LOLC Micro Credit Ltd. (LOMC) reiterating its commitment to uplift the educational standards of children of Sri Lanka held its annual ‘Isuru Diriya Sisu Upahara Scholarship Award Program’ at the Bishop’s College Auditorium in Colombo on 19 December. This year’s event was held for the fourth consecutive year, at which LOMC awarded scholarships and gifts to over 550 students from diverse communities across the country. Out of this, 200 students who obtained top results were felicitated at the official ceremony held in Colombo. Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga participated as Chief Guest along with Central Bank of Sri Lanka Deputy Governor Dr. P.N. Weerasinghe, Central Bank of Sri Lanka Additional Director, Department of Supervision of Non-Bank Financial Institutions H.B.D. Karunaratne, LOLC Group Chairperson Rohini Nanayakkara, LOLC Group Deputy Chairman and LOLC Micro Credit Ltd. Chairman Ishara Nanayakkara, LOLC Group Group Managing Director/CEO Kapila Jayawardena, LOLC Group Executive Director Kalsha Amarasinghe and LOLC Micro Credit Ltd. Director/CEO Ravi Tissera. Out of the children who scored high marks, Malisha Parindi from Elpitiya obtained 190, Kaveesha Eshan Kumarasinghe from Balangoda obtained 189 and Thabirasa Thenuka from Vavuniya scored 189 bringing great pride to their families and communities. Commenting, LOLC Micro Credit Director/CEO Ravi Tissera said: “Isuru Diriya Sisu Upahara is a sustainable CSR program of LOLC Micro Credit. In this endeavour, our vision is to provide opportunities for children from grassroots communities to further their education. We recognise and reward exceptional achievements of Grade 5 scholars, from communities in which we operate, who excel at the annual Grade 5 National Scholarship Examination. When we commenced this program in 2010, our main objective was to felicitate and provide support to children of our group loan customers.” Also, speaking at the event, LOLC Group Managing Director/CEO Kapila Jayawardena said: “Education is one of the most powerful ways of improving and enhancing the lives of many.
