Leaders both overseas and in Sri Lanka who are members of the FRIENDS group are assembling once again to conduct a four-day camp from 4-7 December 2014 at the Sarvodaya Institute of Higher Learning in Bandaragama. 50 children from the Western and Southern Provinces and 50 children from the Northern Province will be participating at this year’s camp.
FRIENDS, a talented group of boys and girls whose roots lie in the Youth Department of the Colombo YMCA, banded together on 1 January 1986 for the sole purpose of being of service to their less fortunate brothers and sisters housed in orphanages.
The FRIENDS motto ‘Search, Reach out and Help’ has been implemented to the very letter in all the above activities. Twenty-eight years have been completed since the formation of this group, although some of the pioneers migrated overseas, the aim and objectives of FRIENDS was enthusiastically kept alight by those who were in Sri Lanka. The ability of those overseas to establish themselves in foreign countries and retain their love arid concern for their country along with the mission of FRIENDS ought to be commended.
Traveling thousands of miles to spend a few weeks in their country of birth to contribute towards the cost and to assist in the implementation of the activities is an indication of their inborn human instinct. The last camp was held in December 2013 at the Subodhi Institute of Integral Education at Piliyandala.
The cost of conducting a camp of this magnitude is no doubt colossal. Through their own initiative and foresight, FRIENDS has taken action to meet the challenge.
A few members of FRIENDS residing overseas will be in Sri Lanka for the camp, assisting financially and morally to make the event a success.
The organizational capabilities of FRIENDS and their dedication to a worthy cause will no doubt be crowned with success. All service-oriented individuals are invited to extend their fullest cooperation to this dynamic group of volunteers in their efforts to foster ‘Love and Fellowship’ amongst children in these homes.
