A six month foundation course leading to the Edexcel Higher National Diploma (HND) in Business is being conducted at HRMI to provide a solid orientation to students planning to start the HND. The foundation syllabus will touch-upon most of the modules covered in the HND in order to enable students to familiarise themselves with the subject content and assessment methodology.
Human Resource Management Institute Director Gihan Talgodapitiya stated: “This course will immensely benefit students who have not pursued business studies at school level. Students who have done maths, bio-science or arts always have their reservations about coping up with business or management related subjects. This foundation course will provide plenty of familiarisation with real HND subject matter and such worries can be relieved.”
Talgodapitiya further commented on the Edexcel assessment methodology: “There are no examinations in the HND. Instead every module is assessed with an assignment. During the foundation stage students will undergo specialised training to fulfil the assignment criteria and will have plenty of opportunities to do practice assignments. This training will eradicate the uncertainties students often have when doing assignments for the first time.”
During the Foundation stage, students will be provided with most of the study packs and text books used at the HND stage in order to enable them to familiarise with the subject matter.
On completion of the foundation which will be held on Saturdays, students have a choice of pursuing the HND either on a full-time or a part-time basis. At HRMI students are provided with internship training in order to facilitate appropriate employment without any undue stress or delay. Internship training is arranged by HRMI with reputed companies where good HR management practices are in place. Part-time students have the opportunity of participating in the internship training program whist pursuing their HND and full-time students can opt for a transfer to the part-time programme to undergo internship training or avail themselves of the opportunity on completion of the HND.
HRMI faculty comprises of a team of outstanding young academics and some of the best known senior management professionals in the country. The practicing managers have been with Sri Lanka’s best known companies including John Keells, Aitken Spence, Hayleys, MAS, Hemas, Unilever, GlaxoSmithKline, Commercial Bank and Standard Chartered Bank to name a few. These professionals contribute the experiences and insights the young students need to fulfil the requirements of HND assignments. In addition, every student will have an assigned Academic Instructor who will provide assistance and personalised coaching.
HND Foundation students have the opportunity of seeking clarifications on their learning by sitting with the Academic Instructor during the week. The details of the faculty are available at www.hrmi.lk.
Edexcel BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) is a globally recognised highly respected British qualification providing a direct pathway to Bachelor’s Degree in Management or HRM with one year of study on completion of the HND. These progression opportunities are available in Sri Lanka as well as in many other countries. With HND, direct progression to the final year of a Bachelor’s Degree is possible in UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore and Malaysia in addition to many other countries including Sri Lanka. At HRMI every student will be required to develop an Individual Development Plan (IDP) which will help achievement of academic and professional goals as well as personal aspirations, value inculcation and character education. Students will be guided by experienced and qualified counsellors to identify goals, assess strengths and weaknesses, and define academic accomplishments and professional skills necessary to excel in their career pathways. Many leading universities in US and UK use IDPs as an integral part of academic training in an effort to help prepare students for their next steps and future careers.
