A Masters level business qualification is appropriate when an individual has acquired sufficient experience and maturity and ready to take-up general management responsibilities at a level of a CEO or GM. Senior Executives or Managers with at least five years experience at functional level are the ideal candidates to pursue an MBA. These sentiments were expressed by   at a recent press briefing on the Derby MBA which has been described as the only qualification offered in Sri Lanka with a total focus on Strategic Management and exclusively positioned for CEO aspirants. He said: “Many professional qualifications are function specific and do not address the competencies required for cross functional management. En route to the top of the hierarchy, a manager needs to develop the understanding and skills to support active engagement in the process of strategic management. The Derby MBA provides exposure to all aspects of strategic management and its content is incomparable with any other MBA offered in Colombo.” When embarking on an MBA, a prospective student must establish without doubt the credentials of the awarding institution and its academic reputation. The esteem and admiration, recognition and respect for a qualification are derived from the awarding institution. The subject coverage and its depth in the learning content is the ingredient that makes a difference in enhancing managerial competencies. The process of delivering learning and the academic guidance a student receives is the ultimate ‘acid-test’ for effectiveness.
