Sets record among international schools worldwide
Elizabeth Moir School recently announced its A Level results for 2015, revealing that an impressive 38% of all papers were graded A*. Out of a batch of just 29 students, well over 60% of the papers were graded A* or A, evidence of a truly excellent all round standard.
Principal of the school, Elizabeth Moir MBE put the unparalleled nature of the results into perspective: “Nine of our A Level students have gained three or more A* grades, and six of them scored an average of over 95% over at least four subjects, a collective feat that is unprecedented in Sri Lanka. Since we are a small school this is even more impressive, but perhaps it is the size of the school that allows us to give our students the attention they need to do so well.”
Jananan Mithrakumar and Sanush Nukshan obtained 5 A* grades, with Sanush scoring 100% in Chemistry – a result which will see him receive the Edexcel World Prize, whilst Ishrath Irshadeen will win the Physics World Prize.
These phenomenal results have enabled the students to gain admission to top universities around the world. Jananan is now at Stanford pursuing Engineering. Sanush, a former Moir Head Boy, won a scholarship to Cornell and is studying for a degree in Engineering. Steffan Paul, a former Captain of School, became the fifth Moir student in eight years to win a place at Harvard.
The results rank Moir with the very top schools in the UK, ahead of famous boys’ public schools such as Rugby and Wellington, and leading girls’ schools like Benenden and Cheltenham Ladies’ College. Nearly a third of the schools’ candidates achieved 3 or more A* grades, which is more than at Wycombe Abbey, a school which is ranked 2nd in the A Level league tables in the UK.
