Communicators invited to show off their talents at ‘SLIM Speech Idol 2013’

The Toastmasters Club of the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM), the national body for marketing, will be hosting ‘SLIM Speech Idol 2013’, the National Speech Contest giving the sales and marketing fraternity the opportunity to showcase their public speaking skills.
This was held for the first time in 2012 and it is the only national speech contest that provides a platform for practitioners and students who are in the field of sales and marketing to be recognised and rewarded.
Commenting on the contest, President of the SLIM Toastmasters Club, Dulip Wijetilleke said, “Effective communication is not limited to merely passing on a message, but also requires such characteristics as the ability to organise content, highlight essential points, use a variety of communication devices and body language. The combined sense of humanity, togetherness and professional development of the national speech contest that is the ‘SLIM Speech Idol 2013’ offers an ideal opportunity for contestants to be far more professional, talented, valued and popular.”
Contestants of ‘SLIM Speech Idol 2013’ will be evaluated by a panel of experienced judges who are veteran and senior toastmasters in Sri Lanka. The panel comprises over 30 judges and Padmini Samarasinghe – the first lady Distinguished Toastmaster of Sri Lanka will be functioning as the Chief Judge throughout the process.
In addition to being awarded the national recognition, winners selected by the honoured panel will be awarded cash prizes of Rs. 75,000, Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 30,000 for overall winner, first runner-up and second runner-up respectively.
Commenting on this year’s ‘SLIM Speech Idol’, the Project Chairman, Hasalaka De Silva said, “The first ever national speech contest was held for the first time in 2012, and the grand finale was a sold-out gala event. Recognising the popularity and the demand for such a contest, we at the SLIM Toastmasters’ Club take great pleasure in organising ‘SLIM Speech Idol 2013’, and encourage all budding speakers to maximise on this opportunity to highlight and display their talent to the industry.”
The Final Showdown is to be held in November 2013.
The ‘SLIM Speech Idol’ contest is one of many major events organised by the club to showcase the talented speakers in Sri Lanka. The SLIM Toastmasters Club was founded in 2008, and has reached great heights in a short period of time, recently winning for the first time in its history the Golden Gavel Award for 2012/13 awarded by the Toastmasters International.
