Cambridge is the best university in the UK, according to a higher education guide.

It has topped the table in the Sunday Times University Guide 2013 for the second year in a row.

In the last 15 years Cambridge has only been beaten twice in the newspaper’s guide, which uses factors such as teaching excellence, graduate unemployment and the percentage of leavers getting graduate level jobs.

The chart-topping success follows the disappointment of being knocked off the top spot in the world by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the annual QS World University Rankings earlier this month.

A spokesman for Cambridge University said of today’s announcement: “This is pleasing to see and is a tribute to the excellence of Cambridge’s teaching, resources, staff and students.”
