Today, ‘design’ has come to the forefront of almost all businesses as an essential element in moving into the future. This is due to the ability of design to add value, enhance or completely reinvent business. In Sri Lanka too, design is gaining growing industry recognition; for instance, the country’s multi-billion dollar apparel business looks to fashion design professionals to transform itself from a manufacturing industry to a knowledge-based industry giving innovation lead solutions to brands worldwide.
Similarly, other mega industries like hospitality and tourism rely on interior and product designers to express the identity behind each business through clever design for spaces, furniture, cutlery, crockery etc. Even large-scale exports like tea and spices, whose clienteles appreciate good design, look to graphic designers for strong logos, brand identities and packaging. What does this mean for ‘design’ as a career path? With the steady rise of demand for designers by all major industries, design careers now present some of the best prospects of today.
However, this shift in the career market is still relatively unknown to students and parents. Responding to the need to create awareness on this, Sri Lanka’s leading design educator AOD recently announced its Design Experience Day 2017 to discuss and share insights on how design is one of today’s best new career paths. The event is an exciting line-up of curated experiences especially designed to educate the general public on the design careers and opportunities available in Sri Lanka and abroad.
This includes on-going exhibitions, video screenings, career guidance and workshops by international and local design professionals. The workshops are designed to provide information and give first-hand experience of studying and working as a designer to students and also their parents who are keen to understand this new career path.
Giving a special insight to this event, AOD principal Karen MacLeod stated that AOD Design Experience Day will be led by a team of professionals and designers from all over the world and Sri Lanka; “Sri Lankan businesses are no longer what they were ten years ago. The talent and the professional roles that they’re looking for are also not the same as ten years ago. As a design educator, we want to create awareness on that fact among students and parents. That is what Design Experience Day is all about. It’s a chance to understand this career path through an interactive series of experience-driven mini events. Everyone is welcome.” AOD being one of the most reliable authorities for design in Sri Lanka, working in partnership with the government and the largest industries in the country such as apparel, hospitality, tourism, etc., the campus is uniquely positioned to share trustworthy information on design and its role in business, plus the growing need for designers within key industries. Therefore, AOD Design Experience Day is a unique opportunity to understand the link between design and business as well as the design careers presented by local industries.
