The ABC School of Early Learning celebrated 20 years of providing quality early childhood education to children aged two to five years, recently. On reaching this milestone, the ABC group of schools launched their website at the school premises at No. 66, Chitra Lane, Colombo 5. The website was launched by a distinguished past parent Sidath Wettimuny whose son Sanjay was one of the first students of ABC, who is now a qualified junior first officer, flying for Sri Lankan Airlines. Sidath and Sharmini Wettimuny and many other past parents graced the occasion.

Today, ABC is known to be a popular and greatly respected institution in the sphere of early childhood education.

“We are a strong educational establishment, with a total of 200 children at both schools,” ABC Group of Schools Director Ayoma Fernando said.

In order to cope with the steady demand for superior education from ABC, in September 2006 the ABC Pre-school was established. Due to the strong commitment and dedication of the staff, as well as the school’s quality teaching methods, the ABC Pre-school has 70 children enrolled as of today. Both the ABC School of Early Learning and ABC Pre-school, work hand in hand in offering the young ones a curriculum which is dedicated to developing a young child holistically.

The ABC School of Early Learning is also one of the pioneer schools in Sri Lanka, in providing ‘inclusive education’, setting up a special needs unit to help the little ones who have  specific learning disabilities and to overcome such limitations, by studying and playing together with the other children. “We are indeed thankful to our qualified, devoted, enthusiastic and caring special needs staff, who shower these special children with love and much support. We have a qualified language and speech therapist who conducts therapy sessions at the school. We are also the model school for BSC undergraduates from the University of Kelaniya, who belong to the department of speech and hearing sciences receiving their educational placements with us,” said Director ABC group of schools Suranganie Munaweera.

The ABC group of schools also provides free and invaluable practical training for trainee teachers who are studying for their pre-school diploma at the Department of Vocational Studies, at Ladies College and Mother’s Touch Academy.

The ABC School of Early Learning is a hub of energetic activity in the afternoons. For the past 12 years, the schools have been providing extra curricular activities such as art and craft, kinder music, elocution and karate. They also provide support classes in Sinhala, English and Tamil languages. The well equipped day care is also fully operational in the afternoons and evenings. “It is heartening to see the students who have left ABC still maintaining close bonds with us, by attending these classes”, said Munaweera.

“We at ABC believe in creating a home for our children, away from their homes. Eing a 20-year-old, ABC remains tall and strong in the field of Early Childhood Education. We will continue our journey to achieve greater heights in the years to come”, said Director ABC group of schools Rupini Tyagarajah.
