Bank of Ceylon Bankers to the Nation awards Scholarships through the 18 Plus Account created with affection for the youth of the nation to the 18 plus account holders who have been selected to the universities every year.
Awarding Scholarships to the 18 Plus Account Holders in addition to special benefits such as gifting a gold coin at the account holder’s wedding, offering a higher interest than a normal savings account, free life and medical treatment insurance, the Rankekulu Account given to the first child, ability to obtain 90% of the account balance as instant loan, debt card facility, facility for transactions through mobile phones and the internet, has made this account more popular among the educated young generation of Sri Lanka.
More than 750 account holders who have been selected to universities have so far awarded these scholarships through this scholarship award scheme launch in 2002 and 92 more will be added to that group this year.
The value of these 18 plus scholarships awarded to the students who have been selected to the universities exceeds Rs. 22 Million.
Applications for scholarships to the 18 plus account holders who sat for the G.C.E A/L Examination in 2010 and have been selected to the universities, started on 1 October and ended on 31 October. In this Scholarship Award Ceremony, 20, 18 Plus Account Holders who gained Distinction Passes at their A’ Level Examination in Science, Maths, Commerce and Arts streams will be given Special Merit Scholarship of Rs. 35,000 for the skill they have shown.
Similarly 72 students who have been selected to the universities will be awarded scholarships by Bank of Ceylon to mark their Anniversary. The only thing 18 Plus Account Holders should do is to maintain a balance of Rs. 5,000 in the account during the year they sit for the exam in the period of 1 January to 31 December.
