John Keells Plc has made history setting yet another important trend in the industry, when for the first time in 112 years a lady took to the rostrum and sold a catalogue at the rubber auction held on 25 September 2012.
Since its inception on 4 November 1910, rubber auctioneers have always been males.
Mekala Wanigasuriya of John Keells PLC sold the RSS catalogue at the above auction and managed to obtain the top price of Rs. 468 for a line of RSS.1 from Pallipitiya Estate of Welgama Investments Ltd.
This was the only lot to fetch that price at the auction. The invoice was purchased by Almar Trading Co. (Pvt) Ltd.
The first-ever lady auctioneer at the world famous Colombo Tea Auction was also produced by John Keells PLC.
