A group of persons, some of whom were armed, yesterday attacked several UNP MPs engaged in an inspection tour of Mattala Airport and Magamupura Port in Hambantota.
In an ugly incident exposing the low levels to which some politically-motivated persons can stoop, the thugs jeered and pelted eggs at the entourage of UNP MPs comprising Eran Wickramaratne, Ajith C. Perera, R. Yogaraja, Ajith Manapperuma and Nalin Bandara.
The incident was despite the UNP team having obtained approval from relevant officials for their inspection tour of the new airport and seaport in Hambantota, which are the showpieces of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The UNP said it would lodge a complaint with IGP N.K. Illangakoon over the attack.
