Japan yesterday said it was prepared to offer technical assistance to Sri Lanka’s energy sector to help facilitate more efficient production.
This was conveyed when Japan’s Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso met President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the President’s House yesterday.
President Rajapaksa and Aso also agreed that the two countries should do more to enhance economic cooperation and promote investment.
During the meeting, the President also expressed Sri Lanka’s gratitude to Japan for its continued support in major development projects and told Aso that he appreciated Japan’s understanding of Sri Lankan issues.
Aso was also joined by his wife Chikako Aso and a delegation that included Japan’s Senior Vice Minister of Finance Yuko Obuchi and the Japanese Ambassador in Sri Lanka Nobuhito Hobo.

Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris, Secretary to the Treasury Dr. P.B. Jayasundera, Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs Karunatilake Amunugama, President’s Chief-of-Staff Gamini Senarath and Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Japan Admiral (Rtd.) Wasantha Karannagoda were among those present at the discussion.
