President Mahinda Rajapaksa returned from UK yesterday to applause, warm hugs and a flag-waving public, as well as religious blessings. Prominently in the frontline was vocal Cabinet Minister Wimal Weerawansa, who rushed to the airport after leading a protest outside the UK High Commission over the bizarre development of the Oxford Union cancelling a pre-scheduled talk by President Rajapaksa on Thursday.
The influential bastion of free speech, the Oxford Union, cited security reasons for the cancellation, whilst most locals alleged it was bowing down to anti-Rajapaksa protests in the UK by the pro-LTTE Tamil Diaspora – Pic by President’s Media
