Following restoration of peace in the North and East, abandoned paddy fields amounting to 83,000 hectares had been cultivated and have begun to produce yield in the 2011/12 Maha season. New land bearing fruit include 11,070 hectares in Jaffna district, 18,381 in Mannar, 18,598 in Vavuniya, 22,660 in Kilinochchi and 12,192 in Mullitivu. The Cabinet last week approved Rs. 28 billion to buy an envisaged bumper harvest during the Maha season.
