Come end 2012, the drive to the airport to catch a flight will be just 20 minutes if all goes well with the construction of the Colombo-Katunayake highway. A Chinese contractor, China Metalogical Group Corporation has taken the challenge to complete the 26 kilometre highway in 39 months and much progress has been made. The estimated cost of the highway is $ 292 million of which 85 percent ($252 million) will be provided as a loan by the government of the People’s Republic of China whereas the balance 15 percent ($ 40 million) is being borne by the Government. Project promoters say the completion of the highway will enable the vehicles to reach Katunayake airport within 20 minutes which otherwise takes one and half hours.  Pic By Chaminda Hittatiya
