According to the November 2012 STR Global Construction Pipeline report, the Asia Pacific hotel development pipeline comprises 1,748 hotels totalling 377,036 rooms.
The total active pipeline data includes projects in the ‘in construction’, final planning and planning stages but does not include projects in the pre-planning stage.
Year-to-date 2012, 664 hotels have opened in the Asia Pacific region with 133,607 rooms. In the remainder of the year, 75 more hotels are expected to open with 14,302 rooms. The Unaffiliated segment is expected to open the most rooms in the remainder of the year with 25 hotels and 3,559 rooms, followed by the upscale segment (17 hotels with 2,950 rooms) and the luxury segment (11 hotels with 2,704 rooms).
In 2013, 667 hotels are expected to open in the region with 130,665 rooms. The most rooms are planned in the ‘upper upscale segment’, which expects 102 hotels with 31,362 rooms to open. Two other segments expect more than 20,000 rooms to open in 2013; the upscale segment (166 hotels with 30,708 rooms) and the luxury segment (79 hotels with 25,611 rooms).
