Sri Lanka’s legendary doorman K. Chattu Kuttan at the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo, celebrated his 91st Birthday on 15 February 2011. He has been part of Galle Face Hotel’s culture since as far back in 1942.

Kuttan is undoubtedly one of the oldest serving employees in the hospitality industry in the world.

Born in 1920, Kuttan has served the Galle Face Hotel loyally and diligently and – in 2010 – he completed his 68th year at the hotel.

Kuttan, when recalling his memories as a waiter, said he had served dignitaries like Lord Mountbatten, Princess Elizabeth, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Gandhi, Yuri Gagarin and Arthur C. Clarke.

Kuttan’s humble greetings, broad smile and characteristic moustache make him a personality you cannot forget.
