The Opposition Leader of the Dambulla Local Government Council says the authorities have not paid attention to maintain the world heritage archaeological site Sigiriya Rock Fortress properly.

Local Government Member Saman Moremada said the fountains in the rock fortress did not operate properly during the past rainy season.

The Fountain Garden, the well-preserved 1,600-year-old water system, still operates during rainy seasons but this time the water just seeped out, the Local Government Member said.

He said that when inquired, the Central Cultural Fund which is managing the site had said that the tubes might be blocked and needed to be cleaned.

Moremada said that the Chairman of the Dambulla Pradeshiya Sabha had promised to inform the Minister of Cultural Affairs about the matter.
