In 2018, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) collaborated positively with the Tourism Industry stakeholders, for Sri Lanka’s success in the international tourism calendar, by carrying out various promotional activities, including roadshows, B2B travel fairs, consumer fairs, international events, and international blogger and journalist programs and consumer fairs, thus bringing some fruitful results back home. Sri Lanka received several international endorsements for the year 2019, highlighting once again of it’s potential, to be recognised as one of the world’s leading travel destinations.
Best in Travel for 2019 – Lonely Planet
Sri Lanka was named the best country in the world to visit in 2019 by Lonely Planet. Better transport links, new hotels and a growing number of activities were cited as the reason the South-Asian island was chosen for the top spot in the guidebook publisher’s annual Best in Travel awards. “Already notable to intrepid travellers for its mix of religions and cultures, its timeless temples, its rich and accessible wildlife, its growing surf scene and its people who defy all odds by their welcome and friendliness after decades of civil conflict, this is a country revived,” says Lonely Planet author Ethan Gelber in the Best in Travel 2019 book.
Sri Lankan food tops list of BBC Good Food Trends for 2019
According to BBC Good Food trends report, amongst other trends, the Sri Lankan food scene has been voted number 1 as an up and coming food trend for 2019.
BBC’s Good Food report has presented that the majority of the world population are looking towards healthy living, a meat free diet and new cuisines.
What has helped Sri Lanka’s rise to the top has been the huge demand for curry as Britain’s most popular take-away food in the recent past.
Top emerging Asia travel destination – TravelLemming
A panel consisting of five of the world’s top travel influencers and bloggers has voted Sri Lanka as the top emerging Asian travel destination for 2019. The awards were published on the site TravelLemming.com, which focuses on emerging and off-the-beaten path travel spots around the globe.

Winners for the Asian awards were selected by an expert panel consisting of five of the best renowned travel bloggers and influencers in the world, with a large following on social media platforms. In describing why Sri Lanka won, the article reads: “Sri Lanka has been poised on the edge of tourism popularity for a few years now, and 2019 might finally be the year it pops.
One of the judges, Meg Jerrard of the popular travel blog Mapping Megan, is quoted as saying: “Sri Lanka is a mesmerising and magical place with something for everyone, and enough diversity to keep a trip interesting. It has stunning beaches, is a haven for budget travellers, has flavourful food, and there are oodles of heritage, wildlife, and incredible landscapes just waiting to be hiked.”

Colombo in Sri Lanka has been named the ‘must-photograph’ travel destination of 2019, in a study. Research of more than 1.3 million social media found that the Asian city is the location travellers most want to take a picture of, followed by Yokohama in Japan and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda.
Commissioned by Huawei to celebrate the launch of its new P Smart 2019 device, the research also uncovered a new-found appetite among young Brits for lesser-known destinations.
Just under half of 18-25 year olds now look for places their friends haven’t been, with more than a third saying they want to be the first to find new travel hotspots, take the photo and stick it online.

Sri Lanka was also adjudged winner of the 2019 Judges award by Unilad, which is one of the most popular travel channels on Facebook. Sri Lanka received the award in January, 2019.
Los Angeles Times names Sri Lanka as one of the top 10 places to visit in 2019
The Los Angeles times, named Sri Lanka as one of the top 10 places to visit in 2019. The website has highlighted places of interest such as the Yala National Park and the Dambulla Cave temple complex, while mentioning about the region’s recently improved railway system, and the scenic routes between Colombo and Galle, also the journey through Kandy and Ella, where one can view the colonial bridges and tea plantations.
Social media posts take Sri Lanka to greater heights
Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau successfully hosted 113 journalists, travel bloggers and social media influencers in 2018, reaching well over a 35 million global travel audience through social media platforms by creating over 700 blog articles and social media posts, with an engagement of 4.5 million, further highlighting Sri Lanka as a top travel destination. The travel bloggers, social media influencers covering various popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Youtube were part of Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau’s visiting blogger platform. The outcome has been reflected in the renewed interest shown by tour operators and travel agents who cite that Sri Lanka remains a favoured holiday destination year after year.
The promotional content which the social media influencers used mostly focused on lesser known attractions, north, east, south, west, highlands, food culture, adventure, Ayurveda, and local lifestyle.
