As an attempt to directly approach the US consumers, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington DC participated in a travel fair held at the Holiday Park, Senior Center in Wheaton, Maryland on 5 October. This is a specific travel fair to educate the senior citizens of the area on travel opportunities and resources available, which was organised for the first time.
The Holiday Park Senior Center is a multi service institution of the Montgomery Department of Recreation of the Montgomery County of the State of Maryland, USA. The centre is serving daily for more than 500 senior citizens over the age of 55. Majority of the members of the institution are wealthy and seeking for new opportunities to keep themselves occupied.
Displayed at the Sri Lanka stall were pictures of tourist attractions, illustrating the beauty and the rich cultural heritage of Sri Lanka. Tourist brochures were available for the visitors and the Sri Lanka stall highlighted the many aspects of the great potential Sri Lanka has in becoming a major tourist destination in the world. Promotional videos on tourist attractions of Sri Lanka were played in the stall. In addition, handicraft items, batik garments, Ceylon Tea and traditional drums were displayed at the exhibition.
Milk rice along with some other Sri Lankan food items was served to every visitor. Ceylon Tea was also served with a view to promoting ‘Pure Ceylon Tea’ in USA.
365 seniors visited the Sri Lanka booth and they were highly impressed about the Sri Lankan cuisine and Ceylon Tea. Many visitors inquired about the tourist attractions and showed interest in selecting Sri Lanka as their next overseas holiday destination.
