Tourism development in the East has been a popular topic of discussion during the past few years.
Though there is tremendous potential for development, whether due emphasis was given to the subject is doubtful.
It is true that there has been a significant increase in hotel rooms in the area but important infrastructure and human resource development is yet to take place.
The Chamber of Tourism and Industry has been pursuing this matter for quite some time and after a careful study of the requirements it has prepared a 30-point program to be implemented in order to promote the development of tourism in the area.
Following the Government’s initiative to develop tourism in the Eastern Province, Chamber of Tourism and Industry President A.M. Jaufer recently presented the program to relevant government authorities from the provincial council level up to the national level.
Among them were the Prime Minister, Minister and Deputy Minister of Tourism, the Governor of the Eastern Province, the Chairman of the Tourism Development Authority and the Chairman of the Tourism Task Force.
Jaufer said that during the discussions he had with government authorities, several positive sentiments were expressed by the Prime Minister and the Tourism Minister in implementing the proposals. A copy of the proposal was also submitted to Tourism Development Authority Chairman Kavan Ratnayake.
