TNS Lanka’s latest nationwide poll for LMD reveals that at least half of the people living in Sri Lanka believe that “Narendra Modi’s election as Prime Minister is positive for Sri Lanka,” the magazine says. It adds: “They view the incumbent Indian PM as a supporter of Sri Lanka, and one who maintains a cordial relationship with President Mahinda Rajapaksa.” But, according to LMD, respondents are “largely against the Government taking further measures to appease the Indians.” Nearly 75% of those consulted by TNS Lanka also feel that Sri Lanka’s ties with India and China must be well balanced. LMD notes that survey participants are against the Government taking further action to appease the Indians. “Nearly three-quarters of those consulted also assert that our nation’s ties with India and China must be well balanced,” it explains. On the other hand, a whopping 83% of those surveyed say that India is more important to Sri Lanka than any other country, especially given its geographic proximity. LMD’s August edition celebrates the pioneering magazine’s 20th anniversary with a poignant two-part story on where the nation finds itself, more than five years post war’s end (the magazine’s cover story is now on LMD’s website – www.LMD.lk).
