Says the mega event brought local image to global stage; Platform staged for enhancing global trade ties
The country’s leading private sector grouping Ceylon Chamber of Commerce yesterday hailed the successful conclusion of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) and the Commonwealth Business Forum.
The Chamber also congratulated President Mahinda Rajapakse for assuming responsibility as the Chairperson-in-Office of the Commonwealth Nations. “The position as the Chair will no doubt have a positive impact in leveraging Sri Lanka’s future benefiting its people,” the Chamber said in a statement.
Following are excerpts from the statement.
The CHOGM 2013 and the Commonwealth Business Forum were strong platforms of opportunities to Sri Lanka in the emerging global market. The CCC hopes that the participation of over 700 foreign delegates will materialize with significant contribution in creating new commonwealth business relations with Sri Lanka in the years to come. It is now in the hands of the private sector to exploit the benefits of CHOGM and the Business Forum to open doors to new business opportunities.
CCC commends the Sri Lanka Tourism Bureau for organising the International Tourism Forum where for the first time over 150 foreign travel and tour operators from 14 countries met approximately 400 local leisure sector operators in B2B meetings. It’s a great opportunity to showcase the country’s capacity to the foreign travel operators as they will now know what they will be offering to their clients.
The ‘Reflection of Sri Lanka’ trade exhibition organised by the Ministry of Industry of Commerce showcased a range of high quality products alongside the events for the foreign dignitaries and local visitors to get a first hand exposure to the products and services that are available in our country.
As a result of the Commonwealth Business Forum, the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce is in the process of organising a business promotion mission from Sri Lanka to Seychelles in early January 2014 having made contact with the visiting high powered delegation.
It’s also important to note that CCC is the first-ever chamber to represent a Sri Lankan delegation in Seychelles. The target sectors in this mission are boats and floating structures, fruits and vegetables, tourism, furniture, resort supplies, gems and jewellery and tea.
So far a number of companies have expressed their interest in joining the trade mission in January 2014. For more details on the mission contact the CCC secretariat on 5588888/2329143.
