President says intl. community assures support to Sri Lanka

Ambassadors from 23 countries yesterday assured their fullest support to President Ranil Wickremesinghe to overcome the economic crisis, a statement from the latter’s media office said. 

It said envoys extended their support at the Ambassadors’ Forum on Debt Restructuring and International Monetary Fund Program chaired by President Wickremesinghe yesterday afternoon. 

Ambassadors from both members and non-members of the Paris Club participated in the Forum. They expressed the fullest confidence that Sri Lanka would be able to overcome the ongoing economic crisis.

This was the first time the foreign envoys had met to discuss and share the latest progress of the economic recovery plan. It also comes ahead of formal briefing by Sri Lanka to its creditors today. President Wickremesinghe also emphasised that the Government is taking all possible measures to be taken to overcome the ongoing economic crisis.

“It is a challenging situation, but we are confident of overcoming this situation, to ensure a better future for the next generation,” Wickremesinghe said.

The President also said that transparency and equal treatment would be ensured at all times during the debt restructuring process.

Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe and Finance Ministry Secretary Mahinda Siriwardana, who were also present at the forum explained the progress of the discussions held with the IMF and the current status of the economy. 

State Ministers Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Tharaka Balasuriya, Shehan Semasinghe, Senior Adviser to the President on National Security, Chief of Presidential Staff Sagala Ratnayaka, Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Aruni Wijewardane and key Government officials attended the discussion.
