• Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera says new initiative will be implemented in multiple CPC and LIOC filling stations today
• Last digit of vehicle’s license plate system will remain effective till 1 August, as technical glitches are being rectified 
• Affirms only QR system fuel quota will be in place from 1 August

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera yesterday said the National Fuel Pass system will be implemented countrywide from today in multiple locations at Ceylon Petroleum Corporation and Lanka IOC filling stations. 

He said that the last digit of the vehicle’s license plate system will remain effective 1 August, as an alternative, to address the technical issues with the National Fuel Pass system. 

“From the 1 August only the QR system fuel quota will be in place, while the last digit of the number plate system and other allocations will be invalid,” the Minister explained.

The National Fuel Pass initiative was originally scheduled to be rolled out yesterday, following the pilot project which commenced last Thursday.

Minister Wijesekara justified the delay to implement the National Fuel Pass noting that certain filling stations were not equipped or had technical difficulties and will follow the last digit and fuel quota allocation until the technical issues are rectified.

He also stated that around 60% of the locations have already been equipped and tested, while those will be given a priority in fuel distribution.

“Request all fuel station owners at CEYPETCO and LIOC to adopt the system immediately and distribution will be strictly enforced to fuel stations with the QR facilities by 1 August. We request the motorists to register with National Fuel Pass and support the initiative,” the Minister appealed.

He also assured that options will be given to users to register multiple vehicles with their business registration by the end of the week as well as to the Government institutes to register.

The Minister said Divisional Secretaries will be given access to the platform to register generators, gardening equipment, and other equipment.

In addition, Police and Divisional Secretaries will be given access to register three-wheelers, whilst allocating each three-wheel to one specific fuel station. 

The Transport Ministry will be given access to register buses, whilst allocating them to depots or fuel stations accordingly.

Minister Wijesekara said other services such as Health, Agriculture, Fisheries, Tourism, Industries, and service-providing sectors will be given access to the system to register their requirements and allocation of vehicles at fuel stations.

He also said that the National Youth Corp and the National Youth Council members and volunteers will assist the initiative at fuel stations in the next 10 days.

Over 3.5 million motorists have registered for the National Fuel Pass thus far. As per the new initiative, the fuel quota for bikes was Rs. 1,500, for three-wheels Rs. 2,000, and other vehicles Rs. 7,000.
