The Zahira Rugby Sevens will be held for the sixth consecutive year, at the college grounds, on 3 March 2013. The colourful event which has gained popularity among the rugby teams of the schools in Colombo and outstation is organised by the Zahira Group of Sixties (G60’), through its Sports Committee Chairman M.S. Mazeer.
He will be assisted by G60’ President Nizam Lantra, Tournament Director Tony Amit, Technical Director T.M.I. Hamid and Tournament Coordinator Muhuseen Ariff, during the tournament.
Fourteen local leading schools in rugby as well as few foreign schools are due to take part in the tournament. Attractive prizes await the winners, in addition to the trophies and medals to all winners.
The cup, plate and bowl cash prizes await the winners/runners up of the cup and the plate. The cup winners will receive a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 and the runners up will get Rs. 25,000 while the plate winners will get Rs. 15,000 and the runners up Rs. 10,000. The Man of the Tournament will be awarded a trophy as well.
Playing seven-a-side rugby football, brings together a new dimension into the playing repertoire of the young students.
The youngsters are called upon to have a different approach, different tactics and more than anything else, a higher standard of fitness for this format of the game.
As we live in an era where seven-a-side rugby has assumed a status of importance mainly due to the fact that a large number of international tournaments are being held in this format, the ‘Zahira Rugby Sevens’ will serve as a much needed boost to the young ruggerites to sharpen their skills and gain much needed experience which will certainly hold them in good foundation for the future.
