Zahira College added another feather to their cap in maintaining the supremacy in schools football by clinching the All Island Division 1 Inter School Football Tournament – 2014 organised by Sri Lanka Schools Football Association.
The final match against St. Mary’s College, Negombo played amidst a large crowd at Zahira College ground last Friday showcased scintillating talents in schools football which Zahira won by 2 goals to nil.
Zahira showed they mean business by playing aggressively from the start of the match and posed many threats by attacking the opponent’s goal. St. Mary’s, not to be out done, kept the opponents at bay by foiling all the efforts of scoring opportunities through their solid defense. They also posed many threats to Zahira through good moves at the goal but could make them pass the line.
Zahira found solace at the last minute of the first half when they scored a goal through attacking mid fielder, Mohamed Humaid, who also represented the Sri Lanka U23 in this year’s in AFC U23 Qualifiers. Zahira led 1-0 at lemons.
Playing with much power, Zahira dominated the second half as well and scored another goal in the 17th minute through Striker, M. Shafeer and sealed a comfortable 2-0 victory.
The 3rd place was won by St. Sebastian’s College, Katuneriya by beating Nalanda College, Colombo, 2 goals to nil played at same venue.
Zahira dominated the 2014 schools football by clinching many championships. Notable among them are the Invitation 7s tournament organised by Elizabeth Moir School, ‘Chox’ Inter School All Island Championship organised by Football Federation of SL, Zahira Invitation 7s Tournament organised by the Past Prefects Association of Zahira College, Futsal Tournament organised by St. Joseph’s College, Maradana and Colombo Zonal Championship organised by Ministry of Education.
