The inaugural Singer-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Ruggerite of the Year and the School Team of the Year 2017 competitions kicked off last week and this week the official results of Week 1 are out.
The first week has seen Yuzraan Lantra of Zahira College Colombo make steady progress.
He received 10 votes in the Singer-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Ruggerite of the Year while the same number of votes takes his team, Zahira College, to the top of the Singer-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Rugby Team of the Year contest as well.
Hans Walpola of S. Thomas’ College comes out in second in the players’ list with five votes ahead of Sumudu Rankothge of Isipathana College and Rishmal Fernando of Royal College.
But the combination of three Royalists and a few extra votes from their followers puts Royal College in the joint top spot of the team’s list with 10 votes. S. Thomas’ and Isipathana have five votes each.
The start has not been rapid but both competitions are surely going to reach different levels before they reach an end after 15 long weekends. The competitions, which enable readers to vote for their most preferred school rugby player from the ongoing Singer Schools Division I Rugby League Championship 2017, will run for 14 more weeks before ending on the final week on 30 July.
Beginning from 23 April, the Sunday Times, along with Wijeya Newspapers publications Daily Mirror, Daily Lankadeepa and Ada, will publish coupons for 15 continuous weeks, numbered for each week from 1 to 15 with the deadline set on Thursdays of each week.
