Sri Lankan powerlifting champion and Asian powerlifting bronze medallist Darin Weerasinghe has been selected to captain the Sri Lanka powerlifting team while Ransilu Jayathilake will be Vice Captain at the Asian Powerlifting Championship to be held from 1-5 May in Bandung, Indonesia.
The Asian powerlifting meet will have over 200 participants from India, Pakistan, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Japan and Chinese Taipei. The Sri Lanka team will comprise 10 members and two female participants from the forces.
Weerasinghe will be taking part in the Heavyweight category of over 120 kg and this is the first time Sri Lanka will have an athlete in the Super Heavyweight category. The Asian powerlifting meet will see athletes lift well over 300 kg in the Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift events. Weerasinghe currently has over seven national records in powerlifting and hopes to guide the team to a podium finish.
