The final 16 players in the 2011 Pin Fernando Trophy golf tournament conducted by the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) and sponsored for the 11th year by United Tractor and Equipment (UTE), have been identified at the conclusion of the knockout phase for the 32 qualifiers.
The round of 32 of this year’s Pin Fernando Trophy was concluded on 22nd July at the RCGC.
The 16 players who qualified for the next round are Stan Nell, S.M. Hameed, Wenders Shieh, Gihan De Silva, Ranjit Perera, RCGC President Sarath Piyaratne, Nimal Perera, Sanjeewa Wickramanayake, Romesh Abhayaratne, W.A.K. Fernando, Ivor Maharoof, Sumedha Amarasinghe, present RCGC club champion Mangala Niyarepola, Sudath Kumar, Affli Raheem and Sarath Wickremeratne, the oldest qualifier this year and a past winner of the Pin Fernando trophy.
The next round of this prestigious tournament is scheduled to be completed by 5th August 2011. “Though traditionally aimed at Handicap players, non-handicap players have also been encouraged to participate at this year’s Pin Fernando Trophy to support up and coming players and to provide an opportunity for non-regular golfers to take part,” UTE Group Chairman and CEO Priath Fernando said. “UTE is happy to continue support to this event, which helps build local golfing talent.”
More than 150 players in various categories including Handicap, Squad and Ladies Divisions took part in this year Pin Fernando Trophy. The qualifying round which started on 9th July 2011 was worked off in medal play format. Pin Fernando was one of Sri Lanka’s greatest amateur golfers and served as the Chairman of several reputed corporate entities in the country including United Tractor and Equipment.
