Thurstan and St. Peters’ crowned as Champions in Desert Cubs Cricket tourno

Thurstan College and St. Peter’s College Colombo immerged as champions of the Under-17 and Under-15 categories respectively, at the inaugural Desert Cubs Schools Invitational 40 over cricket tournament which concluded on Monday. The tournament was organised by the Desert Cubs Cricket Academy in UAE. Thurstan College met St. Sebastian’s College Moratuwa in the Under-17 final and beat them by 10 runs. Batting first, Thurstan made 143 for 7 and was able to restrict their opponents to 133 runs, claiming the inaugural Schools Invitational Desert Cubs Cricket under-17 Championship. It was a thrilling final in the Under-15 category. St. Anne’s College, Kurunegala and St. Peter’s College battled it out in the final while the Peterites were able to clinch an exciting 11-run victory over St Anne’s. The boys from Kurunegala bowled out their opponents for 64 runs in 35.1 overs. Annite Piyumal Singawansa took 3 wickets for 15. Randeepa Ranasinghe and Pubudu Gnanegama shared two wickets each. But St. Anne’s boys could not live up to expectations as they were restricted to just 53 runs. It was quite an impressive bowling attack from St. Peter’s with Sachin Silva bagging a haul of 3 wickets for 6 runs. Senal De Silva and Bauddhima Senaratne took two wickets in the match while the Peterites were crowned winners of the inaugural Schools Invitational Desert Cubs Cricket under-15 Championship The other teams that took part in this tournament were Desert Cubs Cricket Academy UAE, Ananda College, and Trinity College Kandy in the under-15 category whilst Desert Cubs Cricket Academy UAE, CCC School of Cricket and Royal College participated in the under-17 event. The Dubai Duty Free was the main sponsor of the event while Entrust Group, Hatton National Bank, LB Finance and Hameedia joined as co-sponsors from Sri Lanka. Carlton Sports Network (CSN) was the electronic media partner.
