Former Athlete Sugath Thilakaratne has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka yesterday following the sports body’s election, held at the National Institute of Sports Science in Colombo.
Retired DIG Upali Kumarasiri contested against Thilakaratne for the Chairmanship of the association.
During the election, Thilakaratne obtained 83 votes while former DIG Upali Kumarasiri obtained 24 votes.
Accordingly, Thilakaratne, who won the election with 59 majority votes, became the new Chairman.
Thilakaratne, who won the national 400-meter title, is also an Asian Games gold medalist.
