SriLankan Airlines will operate a series of special charter flights between Colombo and Guwahati, India, to carry Sri Lanka’s national athletic contingentfor the 12th South Asian Games 2016.
The five special flights on Airbus A330 aircraft will operate from Colombo on 3, 5, 9, 15 and 17 February to carry 260 passengers, who includes athletes, officials, members of the National Olympic Committee, Sri Lankan media personnel, and official observers. The aircraft will land at Guwahati International Airport following a 3½ hours flight.
The South Asian Games is held every two years between eight countries – Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Afghanistan and the Maldives, although the last edition was held six years ago in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was formerly known as the South Asian Federation (SAF) Games and was first held in 1984.
The 12th edition of the Games is being held from 6-16 February in Guwahati which is in the state of Assam, and Shillong which is in Meghalaya state. It will feature 23 sports and 2,500 athletes.
