Once again the finale for Junior Golfers in Sri Lanka, which takes place at the prestigious Royal Colombo Golf Club, is sponsored by Prima Sunrise Bread which fed the junior golfers for the ninth consecutive year.
The Sri Lanka Junior Open Golf Championship is the final test for juniors who have been pitting their skills against each other in match play format and at two regional events this year. The championship will be held from 7 to 9 December.
Winning the Sri Lanka Junior Open is the ultimate recognition of the year for junior players. Participation from Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Colombo is expected due to the growing popularity of the sport at the regional level. This event will once again be conducted according to four age-group categories and the championship is open to players from any age group category. The age group categories are 15 to 17 years (Gold Division), 12 to 14 years (Silver Division), 10 to 11 years (Bronze Division) and 9 years and under (Copper Division). The overall winner will be declared the Sri Lanka Junior National Golf Champion for the year 2016.
The committed sponsorship by Prima has helped the Sri Lanka Golf Union in promoting the sport at the regional level, thereby paving the way for talent scouting island-wide. This has been cumulated from successful junior development programs being conducted by local golf clubs with the support of the Sri Lanka Golf Union and the holding of Regional Junior opens in Nuwara Eliya and Kandy this year, which was also sponsored by Prima Sunrise Bread. Future national representation could come from this young talent and more tournament opportunities will create the platform for juniors to shine. Over 80 junior golfers are expected to participate in the upcoming tournament. It is a tournament that is open to both boys and girls under the age of 18 years and is the most sought after tournament in the golfing calendar.
Last year’s winner Januka Dilshanhas has now graduated out of the junior category and is expected to appear with the big boys in the national and international arena. However, the new challengers for the junior title will be from experienced players like Vinod Weerasinghe, Armand Flamer Caldera, S. Flamin, and Taniya Balasuriya. In the age group categories young golfers Nirekh Tejwani, Yannik Kumara, K. Danushan, Shanal Binuksha, Sherin Balasuriya, and Kayla Perera will be determined to prove their talent and maturity. The excitement continues to build as the rising stars in the field of young golfers play over the three days to exhibit their talent.
Prima Sunrise, the main sponsor of this tournament, as always, will provide nutrition for the players during the event. Sri Lanka Golf is proud to have built a partnership with the Prima Brand which is committed to promoting the sport among youth and uplifting the standard of junior golf in Sri Lanka by way of conducting three national level tournaments. Also the sponsorship commitment extends to the Regional Junior Opens to be scheduled in year 2017.
