Thivanka Wijesuriya, having garnered 57 points did well to grab the Formula 1300cc Championship title for 2011 at the National Championship Awards Presentation Ceremony organized by the Sri Lanka Automobile Sports (SLAS) recently.
Thivanka was sponsored by Speed Drome and was followed by Praveen Madugalle, another Motor Racing enthusiast who had his basics from Speed Drome, with 35 points under his belt.
Thivanka took to the sport at the inception of Speed Drome Battaramulla in 2010, with the intention of having fun in Go-Karting and was placed among the top ten drivers at the circuit at Battaramulla in the very first year. Having evaluated his potential and performance, the Management of Speed Drome decided to give him the opportunity to compete at the Championship in 2011, although he continued the Sport as a hobby, while at the same time sponsoring his participation for the entire year. Speaking to young Thivanka who was exuberant over his win, he commended Speed Drome for the opportunity afforded to him, which enabled him to reach the highest level in this sport. He further went on to praise the Management of Speed Drome for their noteworthy contribution to uplift Motor Racing in Sri Lanka, and for the support and encouragement extended to young drivers especially in the Formula category.
Speaking further, Thivanka made special mention of Dinesh Jayawardana, Director of Speed Dromei who he says, gave him the much needed guidance and encouragement which helped him immensely in participating in the Championship, thereby brining honour not only to himself, but also to Speed Drome, which serves as an Academy for Motor Racing in Sri Lanka.
Within a short period of two years of its existence, Speed Drome has been in the forefront of Formula Racing, producing many young drivers in this Class which included the Runner-Up in the Championship who made his way through the experience he gained in Go-Karting at Speed Drome.
