Speed Championship 2013 racing kings rewarded

The drivers and riders who showed their prowess during the three stages of the Speed Championship 2013, were honoured at a grand ceremony which took place at the Speedrome in Battaramulla where most of the promising young drivers entered the fray. Most celebrated racing driver

Sri Lanka’s most celebrated racing driver, last year’s double national champion Ashan Silva emerged champion of the most powerful category on four-wheelers, the SLGT upto 3500cc Class while experienced campaigner Dinesh Jayawardena bagged the crown of the SL H Cars up to 1600cc category. Aamir Ghaffoor, an exciting young driver grabbed the Speed Championship 2013 for Formula McLarens 1300cc class proving that he is one of the finest up-and-coming drivers in formula racing in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile another young driver who posed a threat to some of the seasoned prominent stars during the year, Kushan Peiris became this year’s champion in the SL N Cars Ford Laser/Mazda 1500cc One Make class. Michael Wijesooriya won took away the SL N Cars up to 1000cc crown while Randika Niroshan and Ravikumar Thanush emerged SL N Cars Ford Laser/Mazda 1300cc One Make and SL A Cars Mini 7 champions for the year 2013 respectively. Riding sensations Meanwhile the Super Motard riding sensation from Kurunegala, Thusitha Gunasekara has secured this year’s championship in the Group SM Super Motard – Open class. Gunasekara who has proven his class over the past few years, is this year’s national champion in the Super Motard 450cc event category too. Meanwhile Chatura Madusanka was the only one to retain a title, being the defending champion in the Group ‘O’ Standard Motor Cycles upto 125cc (4 Stroke-Single Cylinder) category. Tharindu Dananjaya won the Group O Bajaj One Make Series 160cc class which was a new addition to the Speed Championship. Eranda Sampath Hemachandra was crowned Group O Yamaha One Make Series 160cc champion while Group M Standard/Modified Motor Cycles upto 125cc (2 Stroke) category champion Jeff Andre Chi who dominated his class throughout the year, carried away his trophy. The Bajaj Three Wheeler – 200cc category was won by Gayan Pradeep Perera. Top class racing Top class racing was witnessed during the three stages of the Speed Championship at the Pannala race track, fully owned subsidiary of the McLarens Group of companies and located in Pannala. It is Sri Lanka’s only racing track that has been built according to international IFIA standards and was a great hunting ground for these stars on wheels who fought hard in search of supremacy. The 2013 Speed Championship was organised and conducted by Asian Motor Racing Club in association with Ceylon Motor Cycle Club, The Negombo Motor Sports Club and Carlton Motor Sports Club. National Motorcycle Champions Meanwhile the National Motorcycle Champions were also rewarded at the same occasion by the Federation of Motorcycle Sports in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s champion motorcross rider Gayan Sandaruwan once again proved that he is the king on track when he won the 2013 National championship for the most watched event in motor cycle racing in Sri Lanka, the Group MX - Motocross Bikes upto 125 cc (2T) & upto 250 cc category. Jacques Gunawardena, who is probably one of the most promising young star in the making, secured the national championship for the Group MX - Motorcross Bikes upto 85 cc (2T) (Under 16) category. In the Super Moto 250cc class, Uddika Srimal Malavige was rewarded for his heroics. Thusitha Gunasekara bagged his second championship of the night when he became the national champion in the Group SM Super Motard - 450cc category. Kasun Dhanushka was crowned national champion in the Group SM Super Motard - 250cc class while Sanjeewa Udaya Kumara won the national championship which was on offer for the Standard Motor Cycles upto 125cc (4 Stroke-Single Cylinder) category.
