The world’s greatest all-rounder the game has ever produced Sir Garfield Sobers arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday on the invitation of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).
Chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket Sidath Wettimuny, Vice President Kushil Gunasekara, Secretary Prakash Schaffter, CEO Ashley De Silva and Head of Cricket Operations Carlton Bernadus was at hand to welcome Sir Garfield Sobers at the Taj Samudra.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said Sir Sobers will be a guest of Sri Lanka Cricket during his one week stay in the country and will be a guest of honor at the second Test between Sri Lanka and West Indies to be played at the P Sara Oval from 22-26 October.
The ongoing Sri Lanka and West Indies series was named after Sir Sobers and former Sri Lankan Cricketer Michael Tissera. These two cricketers were the rival captains when Sri Lanka played West Indies in an unofficial Test match at the P Sara Oval in 1967.
Sir Sobers will attend the 2nd Test match against the Caribbean team and will be present at the time of the toss along with Michael Tissera. Thereafter he will also be hosted to a special dinner.
Sobers, a former captain scored 8032 runs (avg. 57.78), took 236 wickets (avg. 34.08) and held 109 catches in the 93 Tests he played for.
